Internship Spotlight: Kiera Mulvihill

The best kind of internship is one where you can explore something that you love doing by gaining experience and knowledge that may be able to help you with your future career. This is exactly what Woodland senior Keira Mulvihill will be doing in her internship at Tina Marie Photography.

Tina Marie Photography is a studio for photographers run by Tina Marie herself. The studio is located in Seymour and was created in 2010. The company takes photos that include studio shots and wedding photos.

For this internship, Mulvihill works at any time she can.

“Since photography does not happen at a consistent rate, I go whenever they need the help,” said Mulvihill.

This means that her work schedule is not something that happens every week, though she does help with this after school and on the weekends.

In school, Mulvihill is taking the AP Studio Art class with a medium, or specialty, of photography.

“It’s similar to my internship, only there’s a more creative side to the photography I do in class,” said Mulvihill.

She has also said that she takes photos for the journalism class and the articles on Hawk Headlines.

While doing this internship for Tina Marie Photography, Mulvihill also has to keep up with the assignments for school.

She has stated that getting “the work done in class or during my study hall helps.” This gives her more time to be able to do her internship, without interfering with the workload from Woodland.

When she is able to help at the studio, she usually works on lighting. Mulvihill said that her favorite part of the internship is the lighting, where she works on adjusting the lights for the photos. This is an important step for creating the photos for the company. Mulvihill said that she would recommend not “be afraid to use more lights” to people who are working on lighting for photos.

While Mulvihill did seem to enjoy this internship, she did say that this is not the specific type of photography that she wants to pursue in the future.

“I wanted to know if photography was what I wanted to do as a career. I found my answer, which is yes- but not in the way my internship is. I would enjoy doing journalistic photography, rather than studio photography,” stated Mulvihill.

Mulvihill was inspired to take on this internship because of her love of photography and the skills it will teach her for future career. The knowledge gained from this experience, combined with her AP Studio Art course experience, will help put her on track for success in her future career aspirations in journalistic photography.
