New Years Resolutions: Making them and Keeping them

Forty five percent of Americans make a New Year’s resolution each year, according to statisticbrain.com.

And whether you stuck to it or not, you probably have made a New Year’s resolution at some point yourself.

The most popular resolutions range from losing weight to enjoying life, to getting organized and spending more time with family.

For students at Woodland, that remains true.

Sophomore Alyssa Varesio plans to keep a positive attitude and quit procrastinating while sophomore Lindsey
Gabianelli plans to be nicer and live her life to the fullest.

Other resolutions include getting a job and volunteering their time.

People usually make resolutions because they want to improve themselves in some way whether it be physically or mentally.

Sophomore Veronica Dergachev said, “People make them [resolutions] to feel like at the end of the year they have accomplished something that would make them a better person.”

People do not always stick to their resolutions until the end of the year, however.

Statisticbrain.com says twenty four percent of people who make resolutions do not have success.

Some people simply forget about their resolutions once their life starts up again. Others lose interest in their goals after about a month or end up setting the bar too high.

Freshman Tina Vlamis believes people do not make their resolutions reasonable enough for their lifestyles.

“If they [people] made reasonable resolutions, they would have no problem working on them and keeping them,” said Vlamis.

Michael Myers, school psychologist at Woodland, believes people who make resolutions have good intentions but thinks it is very hard to follow through in their daily lives and the resolutions become impossible for people to accomplish.

On the bright side, psychcentral.com says that making a resolution can bring people closer to their goals and means they have a certain level of belief in their ability to change something about themselves.

So, this year, remember to keep your resolutions practical and you will be on the road to a new and improved you in no time.
