How Student Government Lays Out the Blueprint for Homecoming

Every year, from October through November, the Woodland Regional Student Government is presented with the responsibility of planning homecoming. From the decorations, to the DJ, to the food, Student Government runs it all.

The Student Government’s Spirit Committee primarily runs Homecoming. The committee consists of five members: freshman Kassie Bailey, sophomores Sophia Ligi, Madison Harte,  and Julia Dommel, and senior Kayleigh Budnick. Each member serves a different role such as handling the money, hiring the DJ, and ordering decorations and concessions. Budnick is the chair of the committee, meaning she is responsible for overseeing and planning the entire process.

“[I would like the dance] to run as smoothly as possible. I want it to be organized and I want to finish decorating before the dance takes place,” said Budnick.

In the past, homecoming has not always run smoothly. Budnick mentioned that in previous years there have been problems of disorganization and procrastination. A primary factor of this is that some don’t realize how close the event is until it’s too late. This year, Budnick’s experience and knowledge along with the rest of the committee set the program up for a successful dance.

A part of this process is the “build days” that Budnick is in charge of planning. Build days are where WRSG members are invited to stay after school to help build the decorations for the dance. Usually around ten members of the organization participate. After the dance, members of the WRSG stay late at the school to clean up the decorations. Build days, setup and cleanup are vitally important so the student body can enjoy an organized and high quality event.

The PTO provided the food for the dance. Students mentioned that they would prefer to have more savory snacks this year, which had been mentioned to the PTO.

Students’ opinions have been taken into higher consideration this year, as this committee is more than willing to bend to the preferences of the student body. The dance was very successful, leaving not only the Student Government content, but the student body as well.
