Lost Sports

Elias Sturdevant, the one man wrestling team, left Woodland with a legacy.

In February of his graduating year, Sturdevant was named the league’s Most Outstanding Wrestler and was awarded an All-State award.

Sturdevant claimed in a previous news interview that he always wanted more students to join wrestling, but the team has not grown since he left Woodland in 2022.

“I would like to see a bigger wrestling team at Woodland,” said Liam Muricchio, Woodland senior who remembers Sturdevant’s accomplishments.

Since Woodland does not have a registered wrestling team with the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC), some underclassmen are unaware that this is even an opportunity.

“I didn’t even know we had a team,” said Ava Napiello, Woodland Sophomore.

There are numerous other sports that were pushed under the rug when their athletes graduated. This list includes, but is not limited to, bowling, gymnastics, and golf.

Sturdevant’s mission was to prove that there is no limit to what Woodland students can accomplish in the athletic field.
