Erik Pulkkinen Athlete Spotlight

Playing baseball since he was four years old, Erik Pulkkinen, freshman starter, has earned his spot on the Woodland Hawk’s baseball team.

In a game against Ansonia on May 5th, he had three hits including a double as well.

Pulkkinen’s success continued in the NVL quarter finals versus Oxford he allowed Michael Belcher, team captain, to make it home off a single, scoring the winning run.

“Oxford tied it up in the seventh inning and ended up going into extra innings,” Pulkkinen said. “I got up to play. We had Belcher on second and I drove him in on a single in the right center gap.”

The team then moved onto the NVL semi-finals against Torrington.

“It wasn’t the best time slot, but we still made it work,” Pulkkinen said. “I just took a test and when we got to the other school, we were rushing warm ups. It was very forced, but we had a lot more energy than they did, and we came out on top.”

Despite feeling the pressure of the game and the challenges he faced that day at school, he performed very well.

Overall, Pulkkinen had a very successful season and is looking forward to the state tournament with the team. The winning streak is very motivational for him.

“It’s just like an appetizer for states,” Pulkkinen said.
