Why is Spongebob the main character… when Patrick is a star?
Woodland Regional drama club is currently in rehearsals for The Spongebob Musical.
For this production, every character is important to tell the full story of Bikini Bottom at risk of being destroyed by a mighty volcano, Mount Humongous, within 48 hours. Spongebob, Squidward, Patrick, Sandy and Pearl fight to prove their worth while Mr. Krabs, Plankton, and the citizens of Bikini Bottom mock them throughout their journey to save their home.
Tom Simonetti, the musical director, announced the cast list February 9th.
Spongebob Squarepants will be played by Claire Cummings, a junior who has performed in four Woodland productions.
“I’m honored to have come this far in the Drama club, having started from supporting parts and now getting to try my hand at a lead role, and I couldn’t be more happy that it’s Spongebob,” said Cummings. “I’m so grateful that I have been trusted to portray such an iconic, beloved character and I can’t wait for people to see the show!”
The rest of the “Spongebob Gang” includes Dylan Tyrrell, first-year drama club member, playing Patrick Star, and Isabella Peralta, first-year drama club member, playing Sandy Cheeks.
Both students are dedicated to come to rehearsals four days a week for two hours at a time. The first month will mainly be dance and music lessons led by Jillian Jackman, Spongebob choreographer, and Ian Youngs, music director. Once April approaches, Simonetti will take over to set scenes. Stage managers, Hannah Mudry and Julianna Fernandez, are excited to help out wherever they can.
Other dedicated performers within the main cast are Connor Doughney who plays Squidward; Alyssa Gillies who plays Eugene Krabs; Runiyah Albino who plays Pearl Krabs; and Evan Moore who plays Sheldon J. Plankton.
The ensemble features Brianna Cochran, Elijah Nastu, Laura Whiskeyman, Michael Strachan, Hannah Semrow, Casey Mulvihill, Fynn White, Gabi Dobos, Rebecca Armstrong, Reese Fernandes, Katie Soda, Celia Misuraca, Sal Santella and Ollie Sewisky.
With a cast of 20 kids, this is Simonetti’s largest performance at Woodland Regional High School.
The Spongebob Musical will be held this spring in the Woodland auditorium. On May 5th, there will be one performance at 7:00 P.M. and, on May 6th, there will be two performances at 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M..
Drama club members have worked their hardest to earn this third show. As in previous years, they have only had two, which proves every performer is a star, not just Patrick.
