Athlete Spotlight: Ervin Owusu

Many people struggle to jump over puddles of rain to avoid getting their shoes dirty. Now imagine that the puddle was twenty feet long and nine feet wide. Most people would emerge from this issue with shoes that are soaked, while Ervin Owusu, a senior at Woodland Regional High School, would have no problem staying dry.

Since freshman year, Owusu has been a major part of the indoor and outdoor track team. He shocked the Woodland community with his incredible speed in the 100, 200, and 4×100 meter in outdoor, and the 55 meter, and sprint medley relay (SMR) in indoor. Recently, he has also become a long jump champion.

“My main goal this year was to do well in long jump in indoor and outdoor,” said Owusu.

This is exactly what he did, placing 3rd overall at NVLs for long jump. In doing so, he set a new personal record, twenty feet and five inches. Owusu also finished first in the SMR relay, along with Jaylen Goodall, Alex Farr, and Samuel Ambrocio.

As a captain this year, Owusu has had to take on a much bigger responsibility than just being a regular 1st place recipient.

“I realized that I can contribute a lot more in a leadership position” said Owusu. “Being a captain is nerve wracking, but exciting.”

You could never tell that being in a leadership position was something unfamiliar to Owusu as he stepped into the role with the best intentions.

“I get to help others with long jump in indoors and outdoors. Being able to do this has helped me out of my comfort zone,” said Owusu.

Owusu has a lot of faith in his team; he describes them as dedicated and hardworking.

“We’re all like a family,” he said.

Coming up, Owusu is excited to run and jump at the state meet. He hopes to keep performing well and get as many awards and medals as possible for his team.

“We’re a small team, but I believe we can do well,” Owusu said.

With his inherent captain abilities, there is no doubt that Owusu won’t lead his team to success.
