Athlete Spotlight: Grace Tottenham

Hearing the cheers in the crowd, Grace Tottenham, Woodland Dance Team Co-Captain, prepares for her final dance season at Woodland. Tottenham has had a passion for dance since her earliest days, beginning when she was just two years old.

“I started when I was two and ever since then, I loved the sport,” said Tottenham.

Throughout her fifteen years of dancing, she has danced at Rita Tottenham’s Dance Studio located in Seymour, Connecticut. She has also been a part of the Woodland Dance Team since her freshman year. Tottenham has made many memories throughout her years of dancing.

“The people I have met throughout the years have made dancing such an amazing experience,” said Tottenham. “Though I would say the competitions and recitals are also my favorite part. They last all day long and throughout the day, my team and I share so many fun moments together. Whether it’s us getting ready or dancing on stage, we always have a good time.”

With dance being such a competitive sport, there are many stressors that come along with it: such as remembering choreography, costume malfunctions, makeup or hair mess ups.

“There is a lot of responsibility that comes with it,” Tottenham said. “As you have been on the team longer, more responsibilities come along.”

Tottenham must keep the team in line alongside Kaylin Giuliani, co-dance captain, by setting rules and leading a good example. She was named captain her senior year and with this new title came many responsibilities.

“Before I was able to joke around a little more with my team, but now I have to make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing,” said Tottenham.

By bringing positive energy and staying on top of things, Tottenham will continue leading her team to another successful dance season.
