Was The Endgame Worth The Hype?

“Don’t Spoil The Endgame,” says directors Anthony and Joe Russo. Everyone has been talking about it, yet no one wants it to be spoiled. Avengers: Endgame has broken box office records within the first opening weekend. The question is: was it worth all the hype and anticipation? Between the upsetting scenes that left viewers in tears and the adrenaline-filled battle scenes, the Russo brothers prove that it was, in no doubt, worth every second.

One of the first and most shocking scenes of the entire movie is when Thanos, the toughest villain the Avengers have ever faced, was killed by the Avengers themselves within the first ten minutes of the film. Thor finally “went for the head” and beheaded him out of pure revenge. This part left viewers shocked and confused because the movie was in total three hours and two minutes. Just after this scene occurred, there was a huge time jump that stated, “5 years later”. This captivated the audience and made everyone want to find out what happened in those five years and what will happen after that.

After the time jump, we learn that Tony Stark, Iron Man, has married Pepper Potts, and has a five-year-old daughter, named Morgan. Since he now has a good life and a family, he sees no reason to try to get all of the vanished characters back from Avengers: Infinity War, even though the Avengers tried to convince him to help bring them back. In one of the scenes, Starks sees a picture of him with Peter Parker, Spider Man, who is like a son to him, and realizes he needs to bring everyone back. He meets with the Avengers and they adventure into the past to gather the stones and bring back everyone they lost.

A real tear-jerking scene took place on a planet called Vormir, where the soul stone can be found. Black Widow and Hawkeye, who were best friends, traveled to the past to retrieve this stone, but in order to have the stone, you must sacrifice the person whom you love the most. This scene was very upsetting for many fans because Natasha Romanoff, Black Widow, and Clint Barton, Hawkeye, fought to keep each other from jumping off a cliff to either one of their deaths. Natasha ended up being the one to kill herself in order for Clint to receive the soul stone and bring it back to the future, where the other Avengers were waiting. It was a very shocking and hard-to-watch scene which left viewers shocked and heartbroken.

A scene that triggered cheering in the crowd was when Captain America was able to not only lift Thor’s hammer but use its power to fight Thanos. This scene was iconic in the comics and was a major part of the huge battle scene.

Originating from the Marvel comics, the huge battle scene that features the most popular Marvel characters is perhaps the best scene of the movie. In this scene, all of the original Avengers, including other characters from their comics such as Black Panther, Spider Man, Doctor Strange, Star Lord, and Captain Marvel, fought Thanos and his alien army. Just before this scene took place, Bruce Banner, who is more commonly known as the Hulk, held all six infinity stones and snapped his fingers to bring back the vanished characters, who “died” in Avengers: Infinity War. Just before the intense fighting took place, Captain America yelled the iconic, “Avengers… Assemble.” The crowd cheered when all of the characters returned. This scene was one of the many reasons why this movie was worth all the hype.

The most spoil-worthy part of the movie was arguably the saddest part. This scene took place at the very end of the battle scene. Iron Man steals the six infinity stones from the Thanos from the past and snaps his fingers, wearing a gauntlet that was attached to his suit. Just as he does this, he yells his last words, “I am Iron Man, “ which is an iconic quote from the first Iron Man film from the trilogy. The snap causes Thanos and his entire army to vanish, just as half of all living creatures did in Avengers: Infinity War. Stark saves the universe, but the power of the infinity stones is too strong for a human to harness. Tony dies a hero and leaves the audience in tears.

By the end of the movie, the audience is upset because of the deaths of Black Widow and Iron man, but the final scene of the movie brings peace to the story. Captain America had volunteered to bring the infinity stones to the exact time and place at which they were taken since the Avengers went to the past to find them. When Cap returned to present day, he was 105 years old. He had decided to stay in the past and marry the love of his life, Peggy Carter. The final scene is Steve Rogers (Captain America) and Peggy Carter dancing together. It brings peace to the end of the movie.

The movie sets up the upcoming Marvel movies and triggers some theories about what will happen next. For example, when Cap returns from the past as his 105-year-old self, he gives his shield to one of his best friends and mentee, Sam Wilson (Falcon). This not only hints and creates theories that Sam will become the new Captain America but also continues the hype of the Marvel fandom. Marvel has brought and will continue to bring the hype to the theaters. There is no doubt that the hype will continue to grow.
