Lisa Seagren’s pottery II class has been working extremely hard trying to create their own forms on the pottery wheel. In this class, each student gets the opportunity to show their creative side while following a few guidelines.

“First they have to center the clay” said Seagren, “after they center the clay properly on the pottery wheel, then they are diving in and opening the center of the clay, after that, they lift it, then shape it, eventually creating a form.”

Each student has a different vision in mind. Some created bowl designs and some were creative vases. Every design depends on what that specific student decides they would like to do as long as they follow the guidelines given to them. This project helps improve the students design capability and teaches them to realize just how talented they are when it comes to hands on projects.

After Seagren teaches the guidelines and knows that everyone has an understanding, the class is basically on their own and has to show as much as they’re capable of. You can’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty and really using your gentle side, otherwise your form will fall apart. Sometimes when the pedal is pressed too hard, the wheel will spin faster than you expected and clay will fly everywhere.
