New Spin on Civics Lessons

This marking period students in Chris Decker’s civics class have been learning about how local and state governments work. So Decker decided to make the lessons more interesting for his students.

“I thought it would be good for them to hear about what they are learning about  from someone who represents them.” said Decker.

So he got in touch with Lezlye Zupkus, who represents the 89th General Assembly District covering Bethany, Cheshire and Prospect. He asked her to come speak to his civics classes about her role as a state representative.

Zupkus spoke in two of Decker’s civics classes about  what a legislator does, the process of creating legislation. and how legislative sessions work.  She also touched upon her experiences getting involved in politics and had a chance to discuss some political issues with the students.

“I thought it would be a good way to connect with some students,” said Zupkus. “In my mind it is really important for everyone to have a voice, especially young people because they are our leaders of tomorrow.”

And the experience had an impact on Decker’s students. They were enthusiastic about the discussion and had a chance to get some of their questions about politics answered by someone in the field.

“I think it was beneficial to hear about what we’re learning from an outside voice,” said civics student Cailtin Vilano. “It defiantly gave us a new perspective on what we’re learning about.”
