Super Bowl XLVI; Twice is Nice

When it comes to the Super Bowl I do not even know where to begin. The New York Giants have hoisted the Lombardi trophy yet again over the New England Patriots in a last second thriller. Everything about the game was unusual and highly unpredictable.

To start the game off, New England quarterback Tom Brady, was penalized for intentional grounding in the end zone which resulted in two points for the Giants and the advantage of a safety punt.

After the punt, the Giants took advantage of the excellent field position and drove the ball down field for a touchdown which was caught by star receiver, Victor Cruz, who has undeniably proved himself this season.

Both of the defenses were doing great, so far but it would be the Giants defense that held the Patriots to zero points.

Going into the second quarter with the odd score of 9-0, the Patriots would fight back and score ten points thanks to a field goal by Stephen Gostkowski, and a touchdown by Danny Woodhead.

This time it would be the Patriots defense that held the Giants to zero points to advance only one point ahead of the Giants.

With the game heading into the second half, and the Patriots ahead, the strategy of deferring at the coin toss would pay off as the Patriots got possession of the ball.

In the third quarter the Patriots took advantage of their possession and scored a touchdown. It was a twelve yard pass to Aaron Hernandez that would extend the Patriots lead to 17-9. The Patriots defense then would step up big as they only allowed two field goals that quarter. The field goals helped as it closed the gap on the Patriots lead to 17-15.

Heading into the final quarter of play the Patriots had the ball and did their best to try and waste away the clock, but after a huge third down stop the Giants were ready to shock the world yet again, and try for the touchdown and the win.

Set back deep on their own twenty, elite quarterback, Eli Manning chucked a long pass to Mario Manningham, (a receiver who Manning has not particularly favored this year), which was caught and completed right on the edge of the out of bounds line. It was the catch of his career.

Landing the Giants on the fifty yard line, this play looked almost too similar to the one I’ll never forget during Super Bowl XLII, which the giants also played against the Patriots.

In that play Manning threw to another unpopular receiver David Tyree, who was usually a return man. Tyree leaped in the air and with one hand caught the ball by using his helmet to secure the catch. That historic play also brought the Giants to the fifty yard line and set up the winning touchdown to Plaxico Buress.

Both of these plays were incredibly exceptional and were completed around the same time.

Now, with the Giants at the fifty the Giants had two options; get in field goal position, and leave the game in the hands of veteran kicker Lawrence Tynes or go for the touchdown to secure the lead.

The Giants fought for every yard and found themselves in the red zone.

We will never be able to tell the exact intention of the coaches, because of how bizarre the next play was.

Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw, made it look easy as he ran through the middle of the offensive line almost untouched, and he slowed down around the two yard line and looked s if he was going to lay down on the one yard line (to set up for the field goal), but at the last second he spun around mid-squat and sat his but in the end zone, for a Giants touchdown.

As awkward as it was, the Giants were now up by a touchdown and to advance the lead even more they tried for a two-point conversion, but failed.

Patriot fans still had some hope as the fate of the game was in the hands of Tom Brady.

All thanks to the Giants defense they stopped play after play, but Brady was able to execute a few plays here and there. Every snap was a heart pounding second that kept fans anxiously waiting to see what would happen next.

The clock was slowly expiring and with less than five seconds left the Patriots offered up one final play to the end zone. With an excellent defensive effort by Kenny Phillips, the hail marry pass to Aaron Hernandez fell to the ground in almost slow motion and the Giants had beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl again, through exceptional offensive and defensive efforts, by both teams.

The Patriots failed to have their revenge, on the Giants who beat them during their perfect season in Arizona. But, with Patriots still have an excellent offense and defense, so you never know if they will get another chance.

The Giants improve to four Super Bowl victories in five appearances. (1987, 1991, 2008, 2012) The Patriots however only have three super bowl titles in six appearances. (2002, 2004, 2005)
