Woodland art showcased at Fine Arts Night

By Michael Conway

BEACON FALLS — A large group of parents and friends gathered at Woodland yesterday for an event that only happens once a year.

This event was not for athletic or even academic achievement, it was to showcase the other side of Woodland talent. The Woodland Fine Arts program.

The Woodland Fine Arts night took place on Thursday, November 17th, at around 6:30.

The students’ art talents were showcased all over the first floor hallway.  Watercolor, sculpture, and other pieces were posted on the hall walls down most of the hallway.

About a half an hour later at 7 o’clock the Jazz Improv group at Woodland known as the Jazz kings took the stage. They performed four great musical pieces, by artists like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Wayne Shorter.

The students played a whole variety of instruments ranging from the alto sax to the clarinet and the drums.

“I appreciate the people coming to Fine Arts Night, and coming to listen to us.” Said Woodland Sophomore and bass player, Steve Mastriana.

Conducted by music teacher Mr. St. George they played songs like “Prince of Darkness”, “Sea Journey”, “Freddie Freeloader”, and “Giants Steps’.  The band played the songs very well, without any mistakes at all.

After the band was finished the chamber choir took over the stage, headed by music teacher Mr. Luis. The choir only sang three songs, one of them “Anthem” was from the musical CHESS.

They also sang songs by Tichelli and Guaraldi/Kern the songs they did were “Linus and Lucy”, and “Earth Song”. During the first song they were musically accompanied by pianist Ji Ye Park, and mallet musician Jameson Stock. After the songs were finished the crowd was thanked and encouraged to view more art which covered the art wing at Woodland.

Not just the students got credit for there selected artwork, but the teachers got some credit as well. Visual art teachers like Susan Lewis, Chris Misuraca, and Kristen Lengyel also got some credit as being teachers to the students with the posted artwork.
