Hawks Weekly Sports Recap 2/20-2/24

This week was a quieter one in the woods as the winter sports season is coming to a close. Nonetheless, the teams here at Woodland are not taking their foot off the gas just yet, and are ready to end their respective seasons on a high note.

Boys Swimming and Diving

The boys swimming and diving team had their final duel meet of the season against Kennedy on Tuesday. The Hawks came away with a win in a meet where the team was solely focused on racing each other. The rest of the week has consisted of championship season practices.

“The goal is to taper some kids completely for NVL- some tapered half for NVLs and half for states, and the rest tapered for mainly states,” said junior Robert Gugliotti.

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team had their senior night Wednesday against Watertown, and won 83-63. The three seniors – Darren Gasparri, Danny Hartnett, and Andrew Borajkiewicz – each had great performances in the win, showing out for their supporters.

“It’s nice to end the season on a good note,” said junior Ethan Stepputtis.

Dance Team

The dance team has spent the week training for their state championship on Saturday. They’ve been conditioning, stretching, and working on routines to perform well for the upcoming weekend.

Girls Basketball

Coming off the heartbreaking loss on Saturday to Torrington in the NVL tournament, the girls basketball team had a strong and consistent week of practice. They have been preparing for their state qualifying game at home against Canton on Tuesday. The girls have been honing in on their defense considering Canton’s height advantage.

Indoor Track

Following the Connecticut State Open Championships, the only remaining meet for the indoor track team this season is the New Balance Nationals. Sarah Cooley and Alex Farr are the only Woodland individuals who qualified for this meet, and have each been training all week in preparation.
