Hawks Weekly Sports Recap 2/6-2/10

As we reach the middle of February, winter sports in the woods are beginning to ramp up. Each team is entering the final few weeks of their respective seasons, as the stakes are now as high as ever.

Indoor Track

Both the boys and girls indoor track teams competed in the Class S State Championship Meet last night. Leading up to the meet, the hawks had a very productive week of tapering, and overall preparation. The boys team placed 2nd as a whole, and the girls placed 7th. Alex Farr, Kian Sirowhich and the SMR team each took home gold medals on the boys side, while on the girls side Sarah Cooley won a gold medal and Dani Celotto won a silver medal.

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team’s hopes for a state tournament appearance unfortunately were ruined on Tuesday with a tough 59-49 loss at home to Ansonia. The team looks to bounce back however in their upcoming divisional matchup at home against Oxford tonight.

“It’s unfortunate that we can’t make states, but we are still working really hard at practice and getting ready for our big home game tonight,” said starting small forward Ethan Stepputtis.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team on the other hand is trending in a very positive direction. They defeated Ansonia 43-37 at Ansonia in a crucial divisional game on Tuesday. Tonight, they look to extend their win streak as they travel to Oxford, a team that beat them earlier this season.

“Ansonia was a good division win and a good win overall,” said starting point guard Lindsay Koliani. “If we can win our next three games, then we will win the division and get the first girls basketball banner in the gym.”

Boys Swim

To begin the week on Monday, the boys swim team suffered a narrow loss at home to a very competitive Holy Cross. Since that loss, they have been training extremely hard all week with practices before school, and after school. Their next meet is Thursday, February 16th against Oxford.

Dance Team

The dance team has held two practices this week, as they approach their senior night tonight at the boys basketball game. They also have been preparing for their competition at Fairfield Warde on Saturday.
