Awkward conversations like the one above seem to occur more frequently with the younger generation. With the rise of the smart phone providing teens with a quicker means of communication, the use of the product has begun and will most likely continue to hinder the teenagers of this generation.

Technology has advanced to the point that people may never have to talk to each other. In public, people constantly glance at their phones, checking their Instagram or Twitter accounts. Emails and texts can now be sent right from a phone. Popular social networking websites communicate the thoughts and actions of people. These means of communication are convenient, but can stunt the growth of a teenager’s social skills.

Nowadays, employers search for communication skills. The ability to speak and present oneself well is instrumental when entering the job world. Bosses and business owners look for confident workers, people who will make eye contact while they are speaking.

“The job market is going to be competitive,” said Michael Magas, a communications and business teacher at Woodland Regional High School. “Anything they can have at their disposal will help.”

Magas believes that certain communication skills have diminished over the years. Students at Woodland are encouraged to take the communications course so that they have an advantage in the adult world. The course is to be taken seriously. Students may not realize that the opportunity they are being offered may play a role in their success in life.

“Students need to take the learning time and use it just as that,” said Magas. “And what I mean by that is putting aside their cell phones.”
