Exploration of Matthies Park

By Jessica Crosby

On Friday, October 21st the AP environmental students at Woodland and the sixth graders of Long River Middle School (LRMS) took a field trip  to Matthies Park for the day.

The advanced placement students taught the sixth graders the ways of environmental science. They had the children explore different stations, learning new things at each one by working on environmental activities.

Students got to observe the environment, explore nature and appreciate their surroundings.  They hiked through the woods and even dug holes in order to analyze the different types of soil.

It took eight months for teachers to set up this project for the students. The woman who set up this project said, “We wanted to find a way for kids to get outside and to not stay on their cell phones or I-pods all day.”

This event was fun, educational, and certainly a day to remember for both the AP environmental students and the sixth graders.
