Student Council to Hold Mock Elections

Whether students are fourteen or eighteen, they will be able to vote for the president this year.

During advisory on November 2, 2012 all students were participating in a mandatory school read that was entitled “Obama vs. Romney: Where they Stand on the 12 Issues.”
Although always important to know what is happening in politics, some students wondered why they were reading about a president race that they weren’t able to vote in. However, this year, students no matter the age at Woodland Regional High School are able to vote in a mock election.
            Woodland’s Student Council
will be holding a mock election to see what the student body has to say about the election.
“The booths will be split between students who are seventeen and younger and students who are eighteen are older,” said Ainsley McMahon, chair of the governmental affairs committee.
McMahon stated that separating the booths allows the student body to see how the eighteen years old’s vote impacted the actual election. It has often been debated that students who are eighteen are not old enough to make a decision on the election. However, students at Woodland seem confident.
“I’ve been watching the debates and getting information from newspapers,” stated  senior Mary Fitzgerald who as of this year is able to vote in the election.   “As an eighteen year old, my age group and I are interested in politics and we have a big voice because we are the future of this country.”
Since all of the student body will be able to vote in this mock election, student council will be able to see how the school felt as a whole on the election.
“Every student will be voting so that we can compare our results to the actual presidential results,” said McMahon.
Whether a student is voting for Romney or Obama, they will be able to voice their opinion during their lunch wave on November 5, 2012.
