Woodland Girls Soccer Blanks Torrington

There was no better way to end the Woodland Girls Soccer Senior night than with an incredible win over Torrington.

Previously in the season, the Lady Hawks had just clinched a win over Torrington with a final score of 2-0. But, this time around the Hawks were even more motivated to get the win.

When key striker, Steph Dumond, was injured during the game against Torrington and taken out for the rest of the season, the girls were determined to win the game for their senior.

Struggling for the first half, the Hawks only led by one goal scored by senior DeBiase. However, when DeBiase was yellow carded in the first half, the team could not find their momentum without their leader. As the quarter came to a close, the score was 1 – 0.

In the second half, not only did the game change, the attitudes of both teams transformed. The Hawks were confident—the Raiders were discouraged. Using this discouragements to their advantage, the Hawks started the second half strong.

Leading the half off, the teamwork between sophomore Marissa Macek and junior Audra Blewitt helped make the score 2-0.

The defense was unstoppable during this game. Led by senior Alaina Nedderman, the ball rarely ever entered the Hawks defensive side of the field.

Seniors Nikole Tyrell and Kristen Laliberte helped Nedderman create a wall that the Raiders never found their way through.

With their senior leaders shaping the rest of the game, the younger members of the team were ready to continue on their success and take charge.

With an assist by DeBiase, freshmen Jess Rodriquez scored the next goal making the score 3-0 with fifteen minutes left.

Savannah Aviz, sophomore on the Varsity team, played a key role in moving the ball up and down the field. Aviz was always fighting to win the ball for her team.

With only four minutes left, the Hawks could have easily let their game down. But being the undefeated team that they are, they only upped their game from this point on.

Freshmen Shea Geary put the last goal into the net with only three minutes left. With this goal, the score was 4-0.

Alma Rizvani, the infamous goalkeeper of the Hawks, finished off her last game perfectly. Blanking the Torrington Raiders, the seniors couldn’t have asked for a better way to finish their senior night. Now 13-0 in the season, the Lady Hawks are looking forward to NVL’s and states.
