Thinking Back on the Fall to Welcome the Spring Sports

In the fall Woodland has five sports: football, girl’s swim, girl’s volleyball, girl’s soccer and boy’s soccer. Overall Woodland’s fall sports teams did well in their seasons.

The football team went 5-5 with their games, not earning a spot at states and didn’t go to NVLs. They kept up their good teamwork even during the losses and stayed positive during the season.

“Even though we didn’t have a great season we stuck together as a team and remained positive, ” said senior Joshua D’Archangelo.

The Woodland Football team said goodbye to fifteen seniors, Tristin Baliga, Luke Cybulski, Joshua D’archangelo, Devon Dorsey, Chico Gasparri, Jason Gruner, Nick Hummel, Blake Johnson, Mason Mastropietro, Kole Molcyk, Matt Petta, Al-Mamoun Saleh, Nick Sciarretto, Matt Smith and Jake Sullivan.

The 2023 girl’s swim season was another success. For yet another year they have made Woodland proud and won NVLs. This year they also came third in states.

“I think our team did amazing, as a group and as individuals, we saw so much improvement among everyone,” said junior Molly Stead.

The swimmers said goodbye to nine seniors, Zoe Bronn, Gabby Costa, Ava Laudadio, Ava Muharem, Angenlina Rua, Sophie Scarlato, Olivia Schwenger, Emme Starzman and Emma Swanson.

Girls volleyball went 21-4 in their overall 2023 season with significantly more wins than losses. This great season earned them a spot in the CIAC class M state tournament. They won their first round against Bacon Academy 3-2, but sadly lost in the second round 0-3 to East Hampton. In the Naugatuck Valley League they went 16-2 earning them second in the league. Although the girls did not win states, their overall performance and teamwork was strong. The Hawks said goodbye to two seniors this year, Erin Donnelly and Emma Liscomb, as well as senior manager Evelyn Meade.

The Girls soccer team had a great season going 17-1-2. They qualified for states, in the CIAC class M playoffs and they won the first round 1-0 against RHAM. But lost the second round to Bacon academy 0-1. They went 13-0-1 and came in first in the Naugatuck Valley League. Girls soccer said goodbye to only five seniors, Siana Ajro, Abby Bunk, Dani Celotto, Casey Mulligan and Kyla O’Conner

In their overall season, boys soccer went 7-6-3, their season led them to qualify for states. In the CIAC class M playoffs they lost in the first round 0-3 to Stonington ending their chance to win states. In the NVL league they went 7-4-2 earning them Fifth in the league. Boys Soccer said goodbye to 12 seniors, Connor Cull, Robert Giampatruizi, Aldin Jahja, Nick Lachapelle, Max Martin, Liam Muricchio, Dean Norton, Evan Polonio, Jimmy Schwartz, Johnny Sizer, Luke Verrelli, and Matt Villano.
