Captain Feature – Ashley Mayfield

Sawing her way through the competition, senior captain Ashley Mayfield makes her mark. In her fourth year of Timber, Mayfield has climbed her way up the ranks.

Through her passion and the support of her teammates, the start of her season has been wildly successful.

Mayfield took first place recently at the Goshen Fair in the bow saw event, which happens to be her favorite.

“My winning time was 17.04 seconds. 17.04 seconds is actually my worst time; 12 seconds is my best,” said Mayfield.

The bow saw event tests a competitor’s ability to cut wood with a bow saw in the fastest time possible. By placing first, and possessing an impressive time, Mayfield qualified for a scholarship offered to Timber athletes.

Bow saw is not the only event Mayfield flourishes in. In fact, she participates in every single timber event. This includes bow saw, cross cut, ax throw, log roll, and pulp toss.

Timber embodies all these events, and challenges the athletes. The team pushes each other to do their best, and then, in Mayfield’s words, “better than their best.” The quality of encouragement and faith in her team is something that she never fails to bring to the table.

“I feel that it is important to be as good as you can be,” said Mayfield. “Even if that means pushing someone to be better than you.”

The Timber Team is a family, bound together by the love of the sport. Headed by Robert Murdy, Mayfield notes how well put-together and cared for the team is.

“He wants us to do our best. He really encourages us to all the ends because he cares about us. He wants us to have opportunities in sports that we could not have before.”

Murdy has been mentoring Mayfield through her four years in the sport. Their bond is strong through their passion for Timber sports. Murdy encourages the team to all ends. Mayfield appreciates the encouraging qualities Coach Murdy brings to practices and competitions.

“I do this to make him proud,” said Mayfield.

Mayfield cares deeply for her coach and her team. Timber is tightly knit, with the help of Coach Murdy and the uplifting captains that lead the team through their endeavors. Timber is guaranteed to be successful this year with the help of their supportive senior captain, Ashley Mayfield.
