Sports Recap 5/1-5/6

We’ve reached May, the month that tends to close out the long year of sports here at the woods. However, our spring sports teams are far from done at this point of their seasons and still have much to accomplish, especially coming off a strong week all around.

Outdoor Track

The boys and girls outdoor track teams are coming off their busiest and most successful week of the season. For starters, both teams came out strong this week on Tuesday with wins over Crosby and Wolcott. They continued the week with an efficient post-meet practice Wednesday, and a workout on Friday. On Saturday, a large majority of the team’s jumpers and throwers traveled to Amity high school for the Org-Jake Spartan Invitational, where Woodland walked away with three medals in total.

“There was a lot of tough competition which really pushed us,” said junior Nathan Messina.

Baseball

The boys baseball team had one of their quieter weeks of the season, however it did not lack the usual success. They opened the week in Oxford in their second matchup of the year. Much like the first game, the boys took care of business and walked away with a 7-2 win. On Friday, the boys hosted Ansonia and once again had a strong performance with a commanding 12-2 win. The boys now have their sights set on Monday, where they will face off against an extremely competitive St. Paul team.

Softball

The girls softball team, to no one’s surprise, is continuing to win. They opened the week with a solid win over Oxford here at the woods. They followed this up with an impressive 21-1 victory against Waterbury Career Academy on Wednesday. Finally, they closed the week out with a 12-0 shutout against Ansonia, extending their overall record to 14-0. The girls now look forward to their three games next week, attempting to extend their impressive record to 17-0.

Tennis

The boys and girls tennis teams here had very productive weeks of practice, despite a lack of matches. For starters, the boys team had the full week off of matches and were able to train consistently each day. They kept up with their conditioning while also preparing for three straight match days next week, where they will face off against St. Paul on Monday, Wolcott on Tuesday, and Kennedy on Wednesday.

“This week was all about patience,” says senior captain Kayo Niebryzdowski. “The whole team pushes each other every practice wanting to be the best.”

On the girl’s side, they had a very similar week to the boys with the inclusion of one match. Monday-Thursday the girls had practice, and focused mainly on foot work and net play. On Friday, they faced off in a double header against Ansonia and were able to win the first match 6-1. However, the second match was sadly rained out and was never held.
