Internship Spotlight: Sierra Griffin

Sierra Griffin, Woodland senior, completed an Advanced Physical Therapy internship in Prospect, Connecticut.

During this internship, Griffin felt it gave her experience for her life after college. The internship included sitting the patients down and either putting an ice pack or heat on each of them. After this, Griffin would have the patients do certain exercises that would benefit their injury. She was there up to two days a week, two-four hours each day depending on how busy they were.

“[The internship] was able to give me the experience of being with the patients and actually being able to talk to them,” Griffin said.

After finishing this internship Griffin realized that this was not what she wanted to pursue in the future. She eventually decided Nutrition and Diet was the path she was going to take. Griffin knew she wanted to start in a hospital, no matter the major she was going to pursue.

“I want to be able to go into hospitals and then from there, once I get older and busier, I want to be able to have my own patients and go to their house to take care of them there,” Griffin explained.

Within this career, she would make a diet for each of her patients, specifically for what they are trying to achieve with their bodies. The Advanced Physical Therapy internship and the major in Nutrition and Diet have similar and different aspects that will help her in the future.

“The internship positively affected me because it brought me into that field, knowing that I didn’t want to do physical therapy,” Griffin said. “Instead of having to go to college, planning to pursue that major, and then having to switch all of it.”

Although Griffin’s internship wasn’t exactly the path she wanted to follow, she believed it was important for her future, giving her experience with talking to patients and giving her the knowledge that she did not want to continue within the physical therapy field.
