Math Honor Society’s Plans for 2022

The members in MHS are enthusiastic when it comes to math. Woodland’s Math Honor Society (MHS) is helping create a math enriched environment for students. Gentiana Ukaj, an advisor of MHS, loves to share her passion for math with the students of Woodland.

“The main purpose of Math Honor Society is to promote enthusiasm for math to the students here at Woodland,” said Ukaj.

To join this club, Ukaj looks at students’ performances in their math classes, your overall math average is what determines if you are eligible. Colin Slavin, president of MHS, has been a part of this society since his freshman year.

“I was an associate my freshman year,” Slavin said. “And then became a full member my sophomore year,” Slavin said.

This year, there are plans for activities revolving around math for the students; however, last year with the pandemic these activities couldn’t take place. Some of the activities they host for students include pie-eating contests, hula hooping, circle drawing, and raffles. MHS enjoys celebrating PI Day on March 14th.

“We are hoping that this year goes back to normal so we can do these activities again,” said Slavin.

Celebrating PI Day isn’t the only thing MHS has planned for this year; they also hope to have guest speakers come in to speak to the club about math. They hope to decorate the math hallway this year.

“When walking through the hallways you can’t tell what hallway you’re in unless you look into the classrooms,” said Ukaj. “So we are hoping to decorate the hallway with math-related posters and other decorations to help signify which hallway you’re in.”

This year’s induction will take place in May, after the midterms. This will give students time to pay the dues, fill out the applications, and complete their community service. To be a part of MHS, you must collect five hours of service relating to math.

“We offer many opportunities for the students when receiving community service,” said Ukaj.

“We allow students to go into the math lab and help tutor those who need help with their math or we have some students go into larger math classes and help out in the classroom.”

With great anticipation of the year going back to normal, MHS has many plans for the students in Woodland. They hope to continue spreading their love for math to others and expanding their knowledge of math. MHS is working to make an enriched environment for Woodland.
