Review :: “What is Love?”

Never Shout Never released their first full length album, entitled ‘What Is Love?” on January 26, 2010.
The CD is a large jump from the band’s usual sound. The band opted for a more heart-felt, short and sweet feel. Though this is the band’s first full length album, none of the songs exceed three, and personally for some of the tracks, I think three minutes is too long. The CD itself runs only 22 minutes when played in its entirety.
The CD’s first track, “Love is The Weapon” is a misleading start to a mostly light-hearted album. This song is the lead singer and writer, Christofer Drew’s, address to war and lack of peace in the world today.
The songs “I Love You 5” and “Can’t Stand It” are addictive, teenaged love driven numbers. The songs gives off a stereotypical pop-Beach Boys-ish sound and stick in your head for days.
The album then takes a nose dive into family problems, and Drew’s losing his religion.
The album’s title track, “What is Love?” is a jab at his parents and their hasty divorce. This song highlights Drew’s musical transition from his usual sugary-pop songs to a ballad with plenty of heart.
This attempt at an album didn’t do it for me. Drew was signed to a record label, for this album, yet it seems his sound has only gotten more annoying. Maybe it’s the cliché, over-the-top lyrics, la-la-las and sho-be-do-dos that get under my skin.
I can’t be all negative. “The Past” is probably the best track on the album. Most likely, because Drew actually keeps his voice in a tolerable range throughout. The song addresses harder issues like drug use successfully. This song divulges into his past, and tells the story of when he decided to leave home.
All the songs on the album are forgettable and lacked substance, but the album skyrocketed Never Shout Never’s success. They are currently headlining both the Bamboozle Left Music Festival and the AP Tour.
