The Future Law Enforcement Youth Academy (FLEYA) is a training program being offered to fifteen male and female students, a total of 30 candidates across the state of Connecticut. Students of the ages from 15-18 will have an opportunity to take an inside look at today’s version of the FBI and how it operates. These classes will be taught by various leaders such as prosecutors, police and special agents. Future employment opportunities will also be offered to the select thirty students.
Topics will include, investigating cyber security techniques along with forensics. Students will also learn about problems in our society of combating violent crime, internation and domestic terrorism, civil rights and hate crimes, and many more. The classes run a week long from July 17th-23rd, 2022. To apply you must have a minimum GPA of 2.8, apply for the date of the class, and complete the entire application. Within the FBI, the acronym used in the workspace is Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity. These pillars represent the three standards the workers must follow and attend to. Students will learn more about what the FBI means and how the organization is involved with everyday issues around the state and country. Many individuals think that the FBI is a government organization that can be scary; it’s not like that at all. In an FBI field office, the workers take pride in where they work by promoting their job with a merchandise shop similar to the DECA store here at Woodland. Students that attend the FLEYA training program will have the opportunity to have FBI attire.
“FLEYA is a great summer camp that was started by the FBI right in New Haven, Connecticut. It has been modeled by field offices across the country. It gives teens an inside look on what a career in law enforcement looks like. FLEYA aims to teach young adults what core values like fidelity, bravery and integrity are about. These values and skills can be carried with a person for their entire lives, ”said Brian Harte, employee of the FBI.
Students will learn that beyond the youth academy that these skills are potential to be used everyday in and out of the workspace. Many students may also have a change in their perception of the FBI compared to how Hollywood alters their image.
“The FBI is not like what you see in the movies, some ways may be old fashioned, however they are proven to be effective and true,” said Harte.
As the FBI expands in influential and moral directions, it encourages young adults to strive to their true potential mentally and physically. Ranging from many departments and positions, every student can strive to someday become a part of law enforcement.
