Captain Feature: Will Brooks

Will Brooks, senior defensive tackle and running back, is tackling a new challenge: captain of the football team.

Brooks is not only a strong player, but also a great leader, and because of this, Brooks was awarded captainship. Only a few people can say they are captains, and it is a respected position to be given. Being a captain requires being a leader on the field, in the classroom, and outside of school. There are high expectations of being a captain, communicating effectively, taking ownership of the team, and leading by example.

“Being a captain means being a leader,” said Brooks.

People have very high expectations for captains; they view them as role models and inspirations to others. Being a captain was something Brooks had always dreamed of. He had lots of inspiration coming from his brother.

“My brother was a captain when I was a freshman,” said Brooks. “Since then, I knew I wanted to be a captain.”

The football program means a lot to Brooks. He has dreamed of playing for the Hawks since middle school.

“When I was younger, I have always dreamed about playing for the Hawks,” said Brooks.

Brooks also had some inspiration from Woodland alumni, including Tyler Bulinski, former quarterback; Edit Krivca, former running back and middle linebacker; and Ben Brooks, former running back and middle linebacker.

Like any athlete, Brooks has very high expectations for the upcoming season.

“My goal is to go all-state and win the state championship,” said Brooks.

These goals are a lot easier said than done. Many factors go into winning these prestigious titles. Brooks said the team must work hard and have outstanding leadership to accomplish these goals.

Brooks already has his post-high school career planned.

“I want to play college football at the University of New Haven and study business management,” said Brooks.

The University of New Haven is a Division II school in New Haven, Connecticut. They are consistently in the playoffs, an outstanding accomplishment for a program. Playing there is something Brooks has always wanted.

Brooks has been working hard for these achievements and is prepared for the challenges ahead. With his work ethic, Brooks will succeed and fulfill his accomplishments of going all-state and winning a state championship.
