Captain Feature – Olivia Schwenger

Known for the positive and upbeat vibe Olivia Schwenger brings to every room she enters, it is no surprise to hear that she has been named one of the four captains of Woodland’s Girls Track and Field team. She brings energy, motivation, and hard work to the team, allowing her to lead the team to their highest potential.

Schwenger began her track career in her freshman year, where she participated in both indoor and outdoor track. She immediately was drawn to her favorite event; hurdling. She is known for running the 100 meter hurdles along with the 300 meter hurdles, and while difficult, Shwenger has a gift of making it look easy.

Unfortunately, these events require much training that typically requires a physical track, something the track athletes ironically have been deprived of this season due to renovations. However, she does not let this mere setback dictate either her goals or her season.

“It would be super awesome, considering our circumstances, to place third or runner-up in the National Valley League championship this year. I feel that would really communicate to others how strong of a team we have,” said Schwenger.

Not having access to a track on the day-to-day has undoubtedly been difficult for the team, but thanks to the optimistic leadership she provides, the team is getting by just fine.

Personal goals of Schwenger include performing well in her events while also making the most of her senior year.

“There is a vibe to this team like no other, never a dull moment, and I trust them to help me to enjoy my final season to the fullest,” She describes.

In fact, this said “vibe” is Schwenger’s favorite part of the team. Pre-meet bus rides hold some of the best memories of her track career.

“Everyone is excited for the meet, we all blast music and sing our favorite hype songs, and it really gets everyone in a good mood to start the meet,” she recalls.

She loves the family culture of the team and appreciates how well everyone works together on a sport that is mostly individual.

“We’re all like a family,” said Shwenger.

Aside from the energy Shwenger brings to the team, she is also very experienced and has the facility to help underclassmen. As previously mentioned, she has been hurdling for the past four years, yet began for the first time when she was a freshman, so she knows what it is like to be new and timid to try new things.

“I feel I can be an outlet, especially to new hurdlers, to help with any difficulties they may come across. I can give them advice, help with technique, and ease them into an event, or the sport as a whole, when it is not always easy,” she states.

Shwenger also participates in various other events that are not related to hurdling. As a talented mid-distance runner, she has participated in the open 400, open 800, and 4×800 relay, among others.

“Sometimes I just get thrown wherever,” Schwenger admits.

While this may be difficult to some, it gives Schwenger a leg up in experiences which helps her to extend her advice to not just hurdlers, but any teammates in need.

While the track and field team is experiencing some adversity this year, as long as they have leaders such as Schwenger the team will be able to reach their full potential.
