Oscar Nominees

Shimmering outfits, powerful speeches, and the most significant movies of the year. The 2024 Oscars is set to be one memorable night. Whether you watch to see which movie wins best picture, to see your favorite actors make beautiful speeches, or to see who wore the most unique

outfit, the night is filled with eventful appearances.

The 96th Academy Awards is set to take place on March 10, 2024 and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, which will make this his fourth year hosting. In addition, the award show is set to air live on ABC at a new time this year: 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm Eastern Time which is an hour earlier than usual.

Junior, Abigail Raffone, isn’t a regular Oscars watcher, but will occasionally watch when the awards are showing.

“My favorite part about watching is seeing the outfits and seeing the celebrities I really like, and I love watching them get so happy,” said Raffone.

Not only will we see familiar faces such as Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone, who are supposedly performing, but we will also see the actors and actresses who are nominated for academy awards this year. Here are the nominations for best actors:

  1. Bradley Cooper, Maestro
  2. Colman Domingo, Rustin
  3. Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers
  4. Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer
  5. Jeffrey Wright, American Fiction

The nominations for best actresses include:

  1. Annette Benning, Nyad
  2. Lily Gladstone, Killers of the Flower Moon
  3. Sandra Hüller, Anatomy of a Fall
  4. Carey Mulligan, Maestro
  5. Emma Stone, Poor Things

Although all of the nominated actresses are incredible, there has been controversy over why Margot Robbie, who played a historic role as Barbie in Barbie, was not nominated for best actress. Adding to this dispute, Ryan Gosling who played Ken in the Barbie film was nominated for best supporting actor. In addition, America Ferrera who also played a highly celebrated role in the film, was nominated for best supporting actress. However, Robbie herself was not nominated, and there are many controversial opinions.

Raffone, a Barbie fan, said, “I feel like it definitely goes against the whole point of the movie,”

As Barbie was a historical film that signified the importance of empowering women, it is ironic that Margot Robbie herself was not nominated.

“I love Ryan Gosling but the whole point was that Margot Robbie was Barbie and that women can have power and they deserve that they have, but then it just ended up being thrown away when Ryan Gosling got nominated,” said Raffone.

This past year, there have been numerous films that have made impacts on society. Whether it be the famed Barbie that every teen girl and their mother raved over, or the history-making Oppenheimer that brought back an incredible story, the movies up for best picture this year are some of the most historical choices so far for the Academy Awards.

The movies nominated for Best Picture include: American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest

“I want to see Barbie win because of the whole message, and it was definitely one of the biggest ones this year, so I feel like it should win,” said Raffone.

With several incredible films featured for Best Picture, it will be exciting to see which movie will come out of the awards with the most wins. Don’t forget to turn on ABC on March 10th at a new time, 7:00 pm to see which movies, directors, and actors will win the most significant awards in the movie world this year.
