Captain Feature – RJ Giampetruzzi

RJ Giampetruzzi, boys soccer senior captain, has achieved the highest high school athletic honor. His consistent efforts of dedication, leadership, and persistence has made it clear that he deserved to be named captain of the Woodland Boys Soccer Team. Even after achieving what he has, he continues to show leadership skills on and off the field.

For as long as Giampetruzzi can remember, soccer has been a part of his whole life. He started playing soccer at just three years old.

“My grandpa was born in Argentina and he made me fall in love with the sport. Thanks to my grandpa, soccer has always been my number one passion,” said Giampetruzzi.

As Giampetrzzi looks to the future, he has a tough decision to make, to either play soccer in college or to give up the sport.

“I will definitely try to keep playing. It’s definitely a tough process. I went to many multiple ID camps to learn more about collegiate soccer. So, hopefully I can get it done and play in college. If I can’t, I will definitely keep involved with the sport though.”

As soccer season kicked off only one captain was named, John Sizer, but as the season progressed it became more relevant that another was needed. So, Giampetruzzi took matters into his own hands and put forth the effort needed to show why he was the right choice. Kenan Collins, the boys soccer coach, named Giampetruzzi the second and final captain of the boys soccer team.

“I think I am worthy of being named captain, but there are definitely other seniors that deserve it just as much as I do.”

Giampetruzzi takes the role of captain very seriously and puts forth the effort to be there for his team. He hopes that under his and Sizer’s leadership that they can go on to win the Naugatuck Valley League Championship for the first time in their careers.

“As a captain, I want to win the league this year,” said Giampeturzzi. “It has been a goal of mine for four years and we have the team to do it.”
