Scream VI: The Movie Review

The “Scream” movie franchise just came out with its sixth movie on March 10th starring Jenna Ortega as Tara and Melissa Barrera as Sam.

I consider myself a scary movie fan, so when I saw “Scream 6” came out, I thought it would be a great idea to go with my best friend, Darci Dokla, to see it.

Although I did like the movie, I would say I’m more of a paranormal movie kinda girl. While Dokla was enjoying the movie next to me, I hid my face in her shoulder.

The movie followed Sam and Tara, sisters, and their friends on their journey of trying to stop Ghost Face Killer.

I had not seen any “Scream” movies prior to this, so it made it difficult for me to understand everything at first, but as the movie went on, it got clearer. Now, I have watched the first one and plan to watch them all.

I liked how characters from the old movies were involved in this one, too. There was a nice parallel between the first movie and the sixth movie with Gale Weathers, a journalist. In the first movie she wrote a book on the main character’s mom when she died, making her look bad. This caused the main character to resent her. But at the end, Gale came back, and helped save the day. In the sixth movie, Gale made an appearance after she, again, wrote a book, this time making Sam look bad. Like in the first movie, she ended up coming back to help save the day.

I think the real reason I hid my face in Dokla’s arm was because the murders were so brutal. They were very gory and the directors did not hesitate to show every detail. The main way Ghost Face Killer killed was by stabbing people many, many times. Personally, I did not enjoy watching that.

“I liked it, but I didn’t like it,” Micheal Goggin, Junior at Woodland, stated in reference to the aggressive killings.

He thought it gave what it needed to the movie as a whole, but sometimes he needed to look away.

When I watch movies like these I always try to figure out how it will end. Throughout the movie, I had many different suspicions about who I thought was the killer. I couldn’t stick to just one. The movie left many clues and motives for many different characters. The writers did a really good job at not revealing the killer because each time I had a suspect in mind, it made perfect sense as to how they would be the killer, until I thought of someone else. To keep the identity of the killer a secret, they faked the death of one of the main characters so the audience and the other characters would rule them out.

“I knew who the killer was immediately,” said Goggin.

He said that when they dropped one of the only hints in the beginning of the story, he connected the dots. I guess I must have missed that.

The movie started with two college boys that killed their professor. I did not understand the purpose of them because they had no direct relation to Tara and Sam. Dokla told me it was to show that the killer had fans and was inspiring other people, but they had no real motive. They were later killed by Ghost Face Killer because he didn’t want an impersonator. I did not think that this part was extremely necessary because in my mind, the movie would have been the exact same without it. I think it may have just been included to show killings have started again.

Although the “Scream” movies are popular because of the franchise’s legacy, I think that the movie was also popular because of Jenna Ortega. She was recently the star of Netflix’s new Series Wednesday. Because I had not seen the other “Scream” movies I did not know that Jenna Ortega was even in the previous movie. I had become a bigger fan of Jenna Ortega after watching Wednesday, so that’s part of why I was compelled to watch. I think that goes for a lot of viewers.

Overall, the movie was produced greatly and held my attention the whole time. There was a mix of emotions and many different components that made it whole.

“It would have made more sense if I saw the other “Scream” movies,” Dokla said. “But it was pretty easy to follow and a good movie if you like horror.”
