Demirs and O’Connell: Super Students

The Superintendent award is an award that goes to students who go above and beyond what is asked of them. Candidates chosen for this award are superb students who demonstrate strong leadership skills and that are unanimously voted for by the teachers of the school.

Liana Demirs exemplifies these qualities because she always takes charge as a captain of Woodland’s Girls Swim Team. Demirs works hard and pushes her teammates to do their best. She encourages her fellow swimmers to give one hundred and ten percent all the time and be the best versions of themselves. Demirs yearns to see her unofficial family succeed in and out of the pool. She also displays great leadership skills in journalism as the News Director of Hawk Headlines where she helps all journalists improve their works by suggestions and edits.

Demirs found out that she was a recipient of this when she was in an interview with Kurt Orgren for an article. She is very proud that she was a recipient of this highly sought after award. She puts in the hard work all the time.

“Overall as a person, I work hard all the time and I don’t need the recognition,” said Demirs, “but sometimes it is nice knowing that others acknowledge the effort and work I put into everything.”

The second recipient, Brian O’Connell, exhibits strong leadership and is studious in and out of the classroom. He demonstrates strong leadership during boyscouts. O’Connell is the senior patrol leader of his Boy Scout troop. He wants nothing but the best for his troops and helps them whenever they need it.

O’Connell also takes charge when in the classroom. He helps his classmates whenever they need it to help succeed in their classes. He is also the President of the Science National Honor Society and Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta, better known as the Math Honor Society. He is not afraid to take up the challenge of being a leader; he embraces it and is ready to lead his peers.

“It is exciting because I put a lot of effort into my studies and it is nice to be recognized for my hard work.”

Both O’Connell and Demirs had a banquet to celebrate their hard work and dedication at Grassy Hill Country Club on Tuesday, December 12, 2022.

“I am truly appreciative of being a recipient of the Superintendent’s award and will continue being a strong leader wherever I go,” said Demirs.
