Woodland Sports in 2016

SPRING

Baseball (9-11)

In 2016, the Baseball Program was carried by Senior Pitcher/Shortstop Tyler Boisvert. Boisvert was Coach Kingsley’s go-to starter before any rivalry game. They ended the year with a 9-11 record which qualified them for states.

The Hawks came away with two victories against their rival Naugatuck. The first game, they won with a score of 8-5 where Woodland’s bats were alive. They won the second game 9-6 where their offense once again dominated.Other key wins came against Seymour, Torrington, and Coginchaug. Woodland has a lot of young talent that will be able to carry this program in the next few years.

Without Boisvert next year, the Hawks will look to several players such as Matt Hicks, Zach Bedryczuk, and Matt Szturma to fill in for Boisvert.

Softball (10-10)

Softball ended 2016 with a 10-10 record which landed them a spot in the playoffs. Jen Triana and Maddie Hupprich split the majority of time on the mound for Coach Luddy. The offense was then helped by seniors Cam Caswell, Sam White, and Gabby Bedryczuk.

The first time Woodland played Naugatuck, the Hawks shut the Greyhounds out with a score of 6-0, where the offense supported a dominant pitching performance. Other notable wins came against Ansonia, Watertown, and Wolcott.

Losing players like Caswell, White, and Bedryczuk, will definitely hurt the Hawks. However, Coach Luddy will look to her new stars in Hupprich, Triana, and Geloso to lead the team this coming season.

Golf

The Golf Team ended their year with a spot in the playoffs as the 14th ranked team. Julian Perino and Zach Crowell made the All-Brass Team which is a big accomplishment for those two players. After losing seniors Zach Crowell and Ryan Warner, the Hawks will look to players like Julian Perino and Alec Feducia to play a key role in the upcoming season.

Outdoor Track

The girls track team won the NVLs and the boys came in third. This season was topped off with many athletes qualifying for states. The boys 3×8 team made it to open states as well. Jeff Giusto made it to states for the open 800 and Brandon Clifford went to state opens for jumping. Unfortunately, this was Coach Shea’s last season as a coach at Woodland.

Boys Tennis (6-10)

Boys tennis is coming off a season led by seniors Mike Roulanaitis and Nick Lucas. They were able to keep the team together through the season just like captains are supposed to. The Hawks made a clean sweep of all the Waterbury teams.

Girls Tennis (11-4)

The girls were a very tight-knit group last season. They ended with an impressive record of 11-4 and all four losses came down to the final match. They also ended up with three shutout wins where the opposing team did not win a match. The girls beat Ansonia and Seymour twice, and Naugatuck once. Alyssa Varesio and Angelina Padilla finished the season undefeated which landed them a spot in states. They were then joined by teammate Allison Mayne in states as well.

FALL

Cross Country

The boys completed their season with an amazing record of 12-2. Their NVL team comprised of Matt Giaquinto, Vinny Costanzo, Matt Luxedor, Greg Aldrich, Kyle Crowell, Wesley Stein, and Tom Buccifero. Meanwhile their States team included Matt Giaquinto, Matt Luxedor, Vinny Costanzo, Greg Aldrich, Kyle Crowell, Wesley Stein, and Colin Kennelly. The girls also came away with a very impressive season.

Football (1-9)

Coach Moffo as given a lot to work with in his first season as Woodland’s head coach. Losing star running back Sean McAllen and assumed quarterback Zach Bedryzcuk, Moffo did what he could. Quincy Koch was placed at quarterback since he was the JV quarterback the past few years. Senior Isaac Negron stepped up and played a huge role for the Hawks this season. Just about every play went to Negron on the ground.

Negron ended the season with six 100+ yard games, 1,167 yards, and topped it off with eleven touchdowns. Scott Lawrence was also a valuable asset to this young team. At the tight end position, Lawrence had eight catches for a total of 107 yards. He then led the team with 89 catches, 48 of which were solo. Even though the Hawks only won one game, a lot of young players saw varsity level playing time. This will be helpful for Moffo next year since these Sophomores already have a lot of playing time.

Volleyball (16-4)

Coach Amato continued to be one of the best coaches in the Valley after coming off yet, another successful season where his team went 16-4. The volleyball team went as far as the semi-finals in the NVL and made it to the second round in states. The girls went on a ten game winning streak where they beat teams such as Naugatuck, Wolcott, and Watertown.

McKenna Cronin led the team in kills with 176. Cronin topped her senior off making the All-Iron team. Setter Maddie Hupprich left her mark by making All-NVL and All-State her senior year and led the team in aces with 89. With the majority of Coach Amato’s starting squad graduating, he will look to players like Stephanie Krebbs, Julia Swiatek, and Fatima Khalid to take leadership roles next season.

Girls Swimming/Diving (10-2)

Girls swim ended their season with an impressive 10-2 record where they beat Watertown for the first time in school history. They placed fourth in NVLs and 8th in States. Two members went All-NVL followed with one member going All-State. Dia Gawronski set the school records in 200 IM (2:16.75), 500 free (5:19.68) and 100 fly (1:01.5) in just two meets.

Boys Soccer (13-3-3)

The boys are coming off another great season where they made it to the second round in states. They came away with big wins against Seymour, Oxford, and Holy Cross. Xavier Gibson and Zach Powanda went All-Iron this year as well. Goalie Anthony Oliveira ended his senior year with six shutouts.

Girls Soccer (14-1-1)

Girls soccer is coming off of a season where they only lost one game which was against a tough opponent in Watertown, who they beat earlier in the season. They beat Naugatuck and Seymour twice and Holy Cross once. Jenna Pannone ended her senior year with an even ten shutouts. The girls also made it to the second round in states.

WINTER

Boys Basketball (0-3)

With a new assistant coach, the boys look to have a winning season this year. After losing Tyler Collodel and Eric Beutel, the boys will look to captain Richard Rousseau and Dylan Sender to lead their team into 2017. They get ready to play Watertown on Tuesday, the third on the road.

Girls Basketball (2-1)

Last season Morina Bojka led the team with over 18 points per game. Now, players like Maddie Hupprich and Eliza Smith are contributing to the team as they each had career highs of 20 and 17 points in the game against Ansonia. The girls prepare to play their next game at home on Tuesday the third against Watertown.

Indoor Track

Indoor track is off to a great season as several players have already qualified for states. The NVL Championships will be January, 30th at New Haven.

Boys Swimming/Diving

The coed boys swim team is off to a 1-0 season. Their next meet is Wednesday the fourth in Torrington.
