Black Friday becoming more intense each year

With lines extended through parking lots, cars crowded in anywhere they could fit, and angry mobs of people shouted in all directions. Shoppers moved in packs and allowed no space for others to get by.

Even before their Thanksgiving feasts were fully digested, people were lining up outside of stores. Starting at about 6pm lines began forming outside of the doors of many stores. For the first time many stores across the state decided to open their doors on Thursday evening, rather than waiting until Friday.

Wal-Mart, Toys ‘R’ Us, Macy’s, and Target all chose to allow their customers to get a jump start on their Black Friday sales. At 10pm, swarms of people broke loose into these stores.
Although Wal-Mart opened at 10pm many of their best sales did not even begin until 12am, such as those on laptops, cameras, and TVs. However, items were already sold out before 12am because they gave their customers tickets and ensured everyone with a ticket got the item they desired.
“I got to Wal-Mart at about 9pm and ran to get a ticket for the digital camera I wanted, I was so relieved when I got the ticket,” said senior, Emily Matott.
According to thestreet.com sales were up seven percent from last year and shoppers bought a total of $11.4 billion worth of merchandise.
However this year many gifts might not have been bought for other people, but for the buyer themselves. According to the same website 44% of customers were not actually buying gifts for others, but were shopping for themselves.
Foxnews.com reported 226 million shoppers were in stores or shopping online over the four day holiday break and spent an average of $398.62.
“It was a lot of fun, crazy, but fun! There were a lot of sales and I spent a lot of money.” said Matott.
