Internship Spotlight: Mackayla Bernier

Senior Mackayla Bernier had found an interest in physical therapy, so when the time came to pick an internship, she chose Amity Physical Therapy in Woodbridge, Connecticut.

At this internship, she was able to see what a position in physical therapy entails and what it’s like to work in this particular environment. This helped her to gain the necessary knowledge and exposure required to make the best decision for her future.

Bernier completed this internship from 3pm-7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The internship lasted until she had completed her required 40 hours.

Bernier mostly shadowed employees, but she had other responsibilities as well. Her duties included cleaning tables, folding laundry, and occasionally assisting patients with their exercises.

This experience gave her a better understanding of what it’s like to work as a physical therapist. She got the opportunity to see what physical therapists do on a day to day basis and what her future may possibly look like.

“It really prepared me for what this job is like,” Bernier said.

In order to become a physical therapist, it takes six years to get the correct degree. This is why Bernier wanted to make sure she was absolutely positive about pursuing this career. She stressed the importance of this experience in helping her make sure she was confident in her decision. When choosing which pathway you want to take, it can be very overwhelming; however, Mackayla’s experience demonstrates what good can come from an internship and how it can help to ease the stress that accompanies this process.

Bernier’s favorite part about this internship was the welcoming and friendly staff. She mentioned that the facility had a very good working atmosphere. She loved working with the physical therapists, aids, and clients.

“Everyone was so nice there,” said Bernier.

Bernier says she would recommend this internship to anyone who is interested in becoming a physical therapist. She describes it as a good way to explore the job and see what you like and dislike.

The main thing that Bernier took away from this experience is her final conclusion that she wanted to go to college to become a PT.

An internship at Amity Physical Therapy is a great opportunity for all students in their Senior year looking to explore the field of physical therapy.
