Sports Recap 5/8-5/13

Despite being the warmest week of the spring sports season yet, our Woodland sports teams were unaffected. With a week full of high temperatures, our athletes were able to rise to the challenges and continue to make Woodland proud.

Softball

The girl’s softball team continued to do what they do best this week, win. They opened the week with an away match against St. Paul, and put up an astounding 28 runs in a 28-4 victory. On Wednesday, the girls faced Kennedy and came out with the 19-0 win. Finally, they closed the week with a 3-0 win against one of their division rivals, Seymour, and extended their overall record to 17-0. The girls will face Crosby on Monday next week, and Newton on Tuesday in an out of conference matchup.

“After seeing how much Woodland has grown throughout the season, I don’t have a doubt in my mind that we won’t be able to beat Newton,” said junior Breanna Thurston.

Baseball

The boy’s baseball team is hitting their stride at just the right point of the season. They opened the week with an extremely crucial game at home against St. Paul. The boys were able to pull out a 3-2 win, and put themselves into contention for the 1 seed in the NVL tournament. They followed this victory with a 11-1 victory over Kennedy on Wednesday, and a 8-1 win over Masuk on Thursday. The boys end the regular season on Monday against Crosby, and will look to start NVL tournament play towards the end of next week.

“We have a very good team this year and it will be fun to watch how the playoffs pan out,” says freshman Erik Pulkkinen.

Outdoor Track

The boys and girls outdoor track teams had yet another successful week as well, and were able to pull off a total of three victories each. Both teams opened the week with an away meet on Tuesday against Seymour and Wilby. The girls were able to beat Seymour 111-39 and Wilby 141-8, while the boys topped Seymour 87-63 and Wilby 112-36. On Thursday, Woodland matched up with Holy Cross here at the woods in an extremely competitive meet. Fortunately, the girls walked away with a 113-37 win, while the boys won 90-60. Both teams are 8-1 overall on the year and will be competing next Saturday for the NVL championship.

Tennis

The girls and boys tennis teams also had very successful weeks. For starters, the girls had one of their best weeks of the season opening up with a double header win against Kennedy. Later in the week, they followed up with a huge win against Seymour. The boys also had a very productive week with two huge victories. On Tuesday, the boys took care of business against Wolcott and came out with a win, and then followed this up the very next day with an away win at Kennedy.
