Woodland Classic Basketball Tournament

Woodland Regional High School is always looking for ways to help people. On March 8th, Woodland’s Student Government hosted a basketball tournament that would raise money for kids and adults with disabilities as March is the month of Disability Awareness.

“We donated the money to the Alumni Association because that is the organization Paul Geary raised the money for back when he ran this event,” said Ethan Valentino, student body president. “With that in mind, we thought they’d be the perfect organization to donate money to.”

According to their website, Fodac is an organization that provides over $10 million for equipment and services for everyone with a disability. It is also a credible non-profit with the mission of improving the lives of people with disabilities. NCAA March Madness is a college basketball tournament hosted in March. Student Government and Leadership thought it would be a fun way to incorporate a tradition while supporting a great cause.

The eight teams in the Woodland tournament were Beaters, The Kiefs, Munch Squad, The Munches, Mojo and the Minions, City Reapers, Fresh Cut Mike, and Duck.

“The maximum of eight teams was put into place to make it easier to make a bracket. We are considering, however, lifting this maximum for next year, if we do this again, and instead using a pool play style of tournament,” said Valentino. “There was a lot of competitiveness during the tournament, but overall I saw a lot of players and spectators having fun.”

All teams did well, but one team had to take the title: Team Munch Squad. They came out victorious and are ready to take the competition next year if it is held again.
