Road to Hadestown

Held at the Bushnell in Hartford, the Hadestown Broadway Tour put on an unforgettable performance.

The trip was introduced to Mythology classes originally, but not many kids signed up to attend. Paul Geary and Jeremy Fisette decided to open it up to the rest of Woodland and interest increased rapidly.

“I decided to go see the show because I love going to musicals and plays. I thought it would be a good opportunity,” said Evan Moore, an invited student from outside Mythology classes. “I’m glad the trip opened up for more students because I think more than just Mythology students could take something away from this.”

All students left with a better understanding of Greek Gods and the stories corresponding to them.

But unlike most love stories, Hadestown is known for having an undesirable ending. The Woodland section of the auditorium was filled with laughter and tears as they followed the journey of Orpheus and Eurydice into Hadestown. Eurydice sold herself to Hades to escape hunger and poverty, and as a result, Orepheus followed to find his love and help others rekindle theirs.

The tech behind the show was what amazed students the most. During “Wait for me,” the set completely opens as lights are swung across the stage to depict Orpheus running underground. Students sat with their mouths gaped open.

“It was so jaw dropping, I started crying,” said Alyssa Gillies, fine art enthusiast.

Along with Gillies, Moore thought this to be the best part of the show as it was a dramatic reveal and story shift.

From the actors to the set to the music, Hadestown was a fan-favorite for the Woodland group.
