Sports Recap 4/24-4/29

As we reach the end of April, and the midway point of spring sports, it is clear that our sports teams are far from slowing down. It’s a good time to be a hawk, as the winning streaks are continuing, student sections are as filled as ever, and the teams are having fun out there.

Softball

Saying the girls softball team has been dominating this year would be an understatement, as they are as close to perfect as a team can get. On Monday they opened the week with a game against Seymour and they won 7-1. Then, Wednesday came along and the girls took home a 25-0 victory against Derby, where sophomore Julia Rowley hit for the cycle. Finally, they closed the week on Friday with a 12-0 win against Holy Cross, in the team’s annual “pink game.” The girls don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon and seem to be heading in the right direction for a second straight state championship.

Tennis

The girls tennis team opened the week on Monday with a win against Seymour. They followed this up with a practice filled with conditioning the next day on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they continued their dominance with a win against Crosby. However, they ended the week with an unfortunate result against Holy Cross. Despite this, the team remains positive and hopeful for the remainder of the season.

“It was a tough loss against Holy Cross but it was good for us,” says sophomore Abbie Raffone. “We know how to improve for next time.”

On the boys side, they continued their successful season with yet another dominant week. They opened with a double header on Tuesday against Holy Cross, where they were able to win 5-0 both times. On Thursday, they faced off against Torrington and came out with another 5-0 victory, and were able to give Torrington’s best doubles team their first loss of the season.

Baseball

The baseball team opened the week off on Monday against Seymour in a rematch of their previous matchup this year, and were able to come out with a close 5-4 win. Then, they were onto Derby on Wednesday where they came away with a commanding 15-2 win. Finally, they faced off against Holy Cross on Wednesday and fell just short with a 3-2 loss. The boys are looking to put this loss behind them and move onto their next game on Monday against Oxford.

Outdoor Track

The boys and girls outdoor track teams were victorious in their meet this week against both Waterbury Career Academy (WCA) and Kennedy. The boys came in with high hopes of winning a close meet against WCA, while the girls were more concerned about holding off Kennedy. Fortunately for both teams, they were able to get the job done and take care of business on Tuesday. Outside of just the meet, the teams had a hard week of practice with an intense sprint repeat workout on Friday.
