Hawks Weekly Sports Recap

You don’t have to be a huge sports fan to know that Woodland’s sports teams are on fire. After a busy week, our Hawks are heading into the weekend with not only some wins under their belts, but some serious momentum.

Girls Softball

The Woodland softball team won the Class M Championship last season, and have simply not looked back since. The team added three more wins to their undefeated record this week, and are reminding fans that not much has changed since last year. They opened the week with a 15-0 win against Derby, and followed it up with a 9-3 win against Wolcott. Finally, they ended the week against Naugatuck on Friday and came out on top with a 7-1 win. It is safe to say that the girls have been taking the NVL by storm, and are not looking to slow down any time soon.

Boys Baseball

Despite facing their first true adversity of the season this week, the boys baseball team had a very productive last couple of days. On Monday they led the week off with a 9-6 win against Derby, however faced their first loss of the season against Seymour the next day. After the loss, the boys had a couple practices in the next couple of days to get ready for Naugatuck on Friday. Fortunately, the boys showed up on a mission in Naugatuck and walked away with a huge 10-1 win.

Boys and Girls Tennis

Both the boys and girls tennis teams had meet action this week. The girls had a long week of training up until their match on Friday against Naugatuck. They ended up winning their meet 6-1 and heading into the weekend on a good note.

“This week was full of practicing drills for singles and doubles and focusing on winning quick points,” said sophomore Abbie Raffone. “Then Friday was match day and we won.”

The boys had a meet earlier in the week on Tuesday and were able to come out with the win. They finished the week off with another win on Friday against Naugatuck to extend their undefeated record to 9-0.

Outdoor Track

Heading into the week, the outdoor track team had prepared for a big meet against Holy Cross and Watertown. With that being said, the meet was postponed to a later date due to complications at the track. Despite being upset about it, the athletes on the team still showed up to practice during the week, and trained just as hard. Now, the team has their sights set on Tuesday next week where they will face off against Waterbury Career Academy and Kennedy.

“It’s upsetting that we couldn’t run this Thursday,” said junior Nicholas Lachapelle. “Holy Cross and Watertown are both two very competitive teams that we will just have to see at NVLS. For now, I’m looking forward to racing on the fresh track.”

Golf Team

The golf team had quite a busy week this week as well, filled with practices and two matches. The boys were able to beat Torrington this week by just 1 stroke, in one of their most dramatic wins of the season. Sadly, they also lost to Watertown in their other match. The boys are looking forward to carrying some momentum from last week into the next.

Friday. Fortunately, the boys showed up on a mission in Naugatuck and walked away with a huge 10-1 win.
