Weekly Sports Recap 4/10-4/16

Spring sports are starting to pick up here at the woods, as each team is in the midst of their respective seasons at the moment. With games almost everyday at Woodland, there is almost never a dull moment here at the high school. With that being said, let’s take a look at how each of our team’s performed this week.

Baseball

The Woodland boys baseball team is simply off to a perfect start, with an astounding 7-0 overall record. They began the week on Monday with a 5-0 win against Wilby, and followed it up with a 7-5 win on Friday against Wolcott. On Saturday, the boys were faced with a non-conference game against St Joseph High School, in what looked to be their toughest game thus far. Despite this, the boys came away with the 10-3 victory. Throughout the week, Micheal Belcher has cemented himself as one of the best pitchers in the state, and was nominated for CT Athlete of the Week. Ethan Stepputtis, Anthony Marsala, and Darren Gasparri all had a strong week at the plate as well.

“Friday and Saturday were huge wins for us,” said junior Ethan Stepputtis. “What a great week of baseball for Woodland.”

Softball

The softball team has been nothing short of dominant this season, with a perfect 6-0 record. This past week, they had three incredible games beginning on Monday with a 23-0 win against Wilby. They followed this strong performance up with a 19-0 win against Ansonia on Wednesday, and a 7-0 win on Saturday. The girls are hoping to defend their title as Class M champions this year, and seem to be heading in the right direction to do so this year.

Tennis

Both the boys and girls tennis teams had extremely productive practices leading up to their match on Friday against Wolcott. At the match, the boys team came to play and extended their overall record to 6-0. The girls on the other hand fought very hard in a neck and neck match and just came up short.

“Wolcott was a solid team and we were able to beat them,” said senior Kayo Niebrzydowski. “We’ve been very dominate so far with our 6-0 record.”

Outdoor Track

The boys and girls outdoor track teams had one of their easier weeks of the season last week, with just one meet against Torrington. Both the boys and girls teams were able to beat Torrington handily, and took care of business despite being a little short staffed due to the April vacation. The team finished the week with consistent practices in preparation for their big meet next week against Watertown and Holy Cross.

Golf

The golf team had a very busy week with three matches against Seymour, Naugatuck, and St. Paul. They suffered a tough loss against St. Paul and were not able to win close matches against both Seymour and Naugatuck. Despite this, the team is ready to battle back next week and go on a bit of a winning streak.
