Divers Save the Swimmers

Woodland Regional boy swimmers usually don’t allow scheduling mix-ups to hold them back from taking home a trophy, but this year, the divers were the ones to take it home.

The boys swim team has two first year divers, Edgar Jorge and Matthew Silva, who did not expect to be the reason Woodland won the NVL championship.

“I never thought we would make it this far,” said Silva. “We didn’t even think we would make it to NVLs.”

Both divers worked hard to support their team.

In a normal season, the divers would have their meet first and the winner is announced at the swim meet a few days later. In early March, there was a snow day which rescheduled the diving championships meet for after the swim one.

Woodland needed forty points to be ahead of the other schools when the swim meet ended, which put a lot of pressure on the divers.

At the NVL dive meet, Jorge was nervous during his first three dives and believed they could have been stronger, but once he learned Woodland was close to other teams, he got excited and started to dive more confidently.

Jorge’s experience shows how mindset can change the course of a whole journey. At their diving meet, Jorge and Silva together had a score of 39.5, meaning they were ahead of the other teams by .5.

Woodland took home the trophy with a score of 755. Their runner up, Oxford, ended with 774.5 points.

Nathan Trumbley, swim team captain, is proud of the whole team’s desire to stay motivated.

“Woodland owned the pool deck and the stands at both parts of the competition, and in the end, took home the trophy.”
