Soaring to New Heights and New Records

Kian Sirowich, pole vault extraordinaire, has made leaps and bounds in the world of track and field. Inspired by his father, a former D3 track star at Union, he joined the outdoor team his sophomore year. That same season, Sirowich qualified for NVL’s with a height of 8’6”, placing him 9th at the league championships.

“I was shocked because I had never done it before,” stated Sirowich.

The following year in indoor, Sirowich set a new personal record (PR) with a height of 9ft, bringing home a fourth place ribbon. He continued his path towards success, setting another PR in outdoor track 2022 with 9’6.” Now, he is currently matched with the Woodland indoor track record at 12ft. The record was previously set by Craig Starkey in 2018.

Sirowich also added to his list of accomplishments with a first place medal at the 2023 NVL Indoor Championships this past Friday.

“I’ve learned a lot of team building skills and have definitely gotten better at coaching and working with some of my peers,” Sirowich stated, referring to his captain’s position.

Similar to other track athletes, Sirowich has faced adversities when it comes to PR’ing.

“Mental blocks are definitely the biggest challenge in this sport,” Sirowich brought up. “If you overthink one small aspect of your form or what you’re doing, then it gets in the way of everything.”

Sirowich also went on to discuss his mindset both outside of track and on the runway.

“All I think about is the mat and just being aggressive and throwing my feet up in the air,” he stated. As for the prep leading up to meets, Sirowich trains like an athlete, dedicating weekdays and weekends for practice and working out.

In addition to his work on the track, Sirowich dedicates his time on the weekend to vault for Sky Jumpers, a pole vault academy. He travels an hour and a half down to North Franklin every Sunday, but his hard work is paying off with tremendous improvement in his technique and success across the board in meets.

Looking towards the future, Sirowich aims to continue vaulting in college. He’s already spoken to the Central Connecticut State University (D1) track and field coach, and is hoping to expand his collegiate profile. In the meantime, he’s grounded between academics, track, pole vault with Sky-Jumpers, Hawk Wings, and the National Honor Society. Woodland should watch out as he soars above new heights, setting PR’s and records.
