Woodland’s Water Emergency

Thursday, December 15th, students were running around in a frenzied state ever since they heard the rumor of a possible half day. Students have were texting their friends and parents as much information as possible.

Woodland principal Kurt Ogren was contacted by Superintendent Michael Yamin this morning around seven a.m. who explained that there was a main water break in Seymour last night to early this morning near Route 67. Seymour’s water system feeds the water supply for Woodland.

“We have, on a typical day, about 750 people in the building, [that is] not good for toilets and sinks and things like that,” stated Ogren. “But a key problem is the sprinkler system for safety. If you don’t have the sprinkler system running for safety, you can’t have school.”

If the sprinklers can not work, Woodland can be put in danger in case of a fire. While students hoped for a half day, teachers had their fingers crossed that the sprinklers will be fixed in time.

At around 7:45 a.m., Ogren was informed that the water system was back on, but the sprinkles were still not working.

If the sprinklers were not fixed in time, all the buses would need to come back to Woodland to bring students home. Woodland would have to wait for all the elementary schoolers to be dropped off at school so the buses can head back for our students.

“If I get a call by 8:45 a.m. saying the sprinkler systems are not working… [the school buses] would come back here say nine o’clock approximately and start bringing students on either the worst case.

Below is a copy of the Schoology posted by the “Desk of Woodland Regional High School” at 7:12 that morning.

At 8:52 a.m, teachers were emailed by Orgen and there was a schoology post stating we will stay in school the rest of the day.
