Hyping Up Your Hawks

After cheering for four consecutive years, junior captain Angelina Maestri now brings spirit and compassion to the Woodlands Girls Cheer team. Her passion for cheer comes from the bond created between the team, which is why Maestri stayed with the sport.

As a back spot (the teammate that sports the flyer) , Maestri serves a valuable role on the team by controlling the base of the stunt.

Stunts are one of the most important parts of competition. This year, competing is extremely important to the cheer team as they weren’t able to compete last season.

“My hopes are that we make it to competing because last year the season got cut because the coach didn’t think we were ready,” says Maestri.

Maestri wants the team to be satisfied with what they do, and always put in 100% effort.

Maestri has great chemistry with the team this year,

“Everyone is friends with each other and we like to work hard for what we want.”

Maestri’s co-captain this year is Katelynn Yoxall. Maestri considers Yoxall to be her role model inside the cheer community.

“She is very passionate and she knows when to have fun and when to get things done,” says Maestri.

By looking up to Yoxall, Maestri has learned valuable lessons when it comes to being the captain of a team. She understands the importance of being accepting and compassionate towards her teammates.

The trust Maestri has with her flyers and fellow bases have allowed her to partake in more advanced stunts. She has mastered a few stunting skills that have not been attainable in the past. Some of the stunting skills the team does are made for an elite level, Maestri mentions.

Sideline and competition cheer are both very different types of cheering. Sideline cheer is supporting other sports teams, competition cheer is competing with a routine. As for sideline cheer, Maestri enjoys cheers that are interactive with the fans in the stands.

“I like to see people getting hype,” says Maestri.

Maestri’s positive outlook and competitive manner has earned her a spot as one of Woodland’s cheer captains. We are sure to see spectacular things from Maestri this season, along with the rest of your Woodland cheerleaders.
