Cross Country Running with Small Numbers

The best things come in small packages. As the saying goes, small groups should not be underestimated. This 2022 Cross Country Season there are eighteen runners on the team; eleven on the boys team and seven on the girls team. With five cross country meets and one invitational before NVLs, the Hawks are expecting to “outfly” every team.

“Usually, we have around thirty runners, boys and girls combined, but we have almost half this year,” said Nathan Trumbley, Cross Country captain. “The team naturally goes through phases of having more or less runners, but this year there is an exceptionally low number.”

For each meet, at least five runners are needed per team– boys and girls– in order to qualify. Due to illness and injuries, the girls team has not qualified for a few meets this season.

Even though this season has had its difficulties, the team never failed to smile.

“It is a short season,” said Trumbley. “We are making the most out of our two months together.”

The boy and girl cross country teams were on a winning streak and expected to take the league championship. In the NVL championship on October 19th, the girls placed in third and the boys placed in sixth.

The Hawks thrived off the quote, “If you think you cannot, you will not.”

The runners are always determined to train hard and drop their times. Even when it gets hard, they try to keep that mindset.

“Despite the small team, we are still able to represent our school pride and prove to others that Woodland is still around, strong as ever.”
