National Honor Society Shares Knowledge and Joy Through Reading

The National Honor Society aims to help make reading more fun through virtual meetings with elementary students. Jodie D’Alexander, the National Honor Society advisor, started a program last year reading to students in both Prospect Elementary School and Laurel Ledge.

While it is a relatively new program, it has helped make reading more engaging to students. Teachers and members of the National Honor Society can volunteer to read to the elementary students. The current schedule was designed to take up the month of March. D’Alexander has also started “mystery read alouds,” which is where teachers and students don’t know who is going to read, making reading more fun.

“Because it’s a mystery read aloud nobody will know who is going to read. They get excited when it’s a high school student,” D’Alexander said.

Not only are the students excited, the teachers are too when a mystery reader participates. Everyone enjoys these virtual learning activities. The National Honor Society members love the fact that they can reconnect with their past elementary teachers.

“They love it; they are on board. It’s a fun way to give back to the elementary and it makes the elementary students excited to see the higher schoolers,” D’Alexander said.

Literature taught through virtual meetings is amazing and effective. Students and teachers have enjoyed both reading and connecting with past teachers.

“Mrs. Becker [and I] will continue to make this a yearly community service event for Woodlands National Honor Society students,” D’Alexander revealed.
