Marketing Class or Up-and-Coming Business?

Michael Magas’ B3 Principles of Marketing class is breaking the boundaries between class and business by creating a business plan and product that will soon involve the input of the entire student body.

Magas began the first class of the semester by explaining the procedure for a hypothetical fire/escape drill. With these instructions, Magas introduced the class to a concept that has never been incorporated in schools before: a plethora of warm blankets stored in a reachable place for students to grab incase of a fire/escape drill during cold or rainy weather.

Magas then pitched the semester-long project to the class. The project will consist of creating a business plan in which the students will create and market a faux product that will not only protect teachers and students from inclement weather during fire and escape drills but also be easy to grab-and-go.

Magas advised the students to carefully pay attention to each class, as everything they would learn in the class would have to be applied to the project. The students will use their marketing knowledge to design, market, and “sell” their fake products.

During the beginning stages of the project, Magas would like to call upon the student body for their input and advice. Magas split the 25 person class into seven groups and had each group create their own name for the product. He would like the help of the Woodland students in voting on a final product name. The names to choose from are The Snuggler, Cover Me Up, Teacher’s Pet, Ready Weather, The Class Saver, Grab and Go, Port a Fort, and LifeProof Poncho.

“The biggest thing I hope that the students get away from this project is that they get an understanding of what it takes to develop a new product and get it out to the consumer,” stated Magas.
