Student Government in WRHS

“What is Student Government? That’s the real question,” asked Emily Laput, this year’s 2021-22 Student Government President. And she answered her own question by explaining that Student Government is the behind the scenes coordinators of the school.

Laput went on to further explain Student Government’s role at Woodland and how it affects every aspect of Region 16 from academics to school events. In the past, they changed the weight of AP classes as well as allowed sophomores to take AP courses. This year, they have an abundance of activities and events that Christoper Tomlin, Student Government’s advisor, hopes to accomplish.

“This year we are so excited to plan Homecoming, Spirit Week, a color run, cards for kids, cards for custodians, pink outs, pep rally, blankets for babies, ugly sweater day, powerpuff, cards for kids, staff breakfast, and gifts for teachers,” Tomlin stated.

They are also hoping to bring back the popular Grim Reaper Day in order to spread awareness about being sober at prom, as well as introduce new ideas such as a spring fling.

However, Student Government’s main goal this year is to boost rookie engagement. After suffering through the pandemic last year, it is important that they increase their enrollment.

“On every first Tuesday of the month, we have leadership meetings, every third Tuesday is committee meetings, and every second and fourth Tuesday is senate meetings,” Mr. Tomlin explained.

Laput agrees with that assessment and looks to move forward this year.

“Last year we did not have as many opportunities as we would have liked, and this year we hope to rekindle the fire,” said Laput.

One way they plan to “rekindle their fire” this year is by hosting the State Wide Connecticut Association of Students Council in March. They anticipate 200-300 students will come to Woodland to learn more about leadership in their community.

Student Government works towards helping their members reach their smart goals in order to measure their success and find the best way to approach Woodland.
