Boys Soccer Vs. Naugatuck Recap

Down 2-0 at the half in Boys Soccer action, the Hawks’ chances of walking out of Naugatuck High School with anything but a loss looked bleak. However, that changed when Luca Cambra and Matt Villano scored two game changing goals. Cambra knocked in his goal with around twenty minutes left and Villano found the back of the net in the 75th minute to knot the game at two-all.

“It was exhilarating,” Cambra noted. “It came at a time where we needed to get on the board and I was extremely excited when I saw it hit the back of the net and felt a big sense of relief.”

“This was our biggest game of the season,” Villano said,  “and to come back as we did, it felt great.”

It wasn’t just the offensive players that changed the game. After two early errors that led to two Naugatuck goals, the Hawk’s defense locked up and shut down the Greyhounds. Led by captain Sean Swanson and stellar play from DJ Mulligan in goal the Hawks swatted away any attempts the Greyhounds ripped at them in the second half.

Coach Kennan Collins didn’t have to do much to get his team ready for the second half.

“Sean Hussey and some of the other seniors were walking around telling guys that half didn’t even happen and to lock in,” Collins noted. “These guys never quit and the leadership and culture they’ve built was the reason they came back.”

He praised his team not only for overcoming adversity in a 2-0 deficit but doing it on the road against one of their rivals.

That perseverance and ability to overcome adversity will only aid them come NVL and State tournament time.  Especially after tying with one of the better teams in the NVL on a rainy Monday Night.

Cambra notes that the Hawks have high hopes and expectations.

“Our team never quits.”
